The Drakensburg region has between thirty-five and forty thousand Bushman artworks, the largest collection of pre-history era art in sub-Saharan Africa. The artworks were made by San artists using clay, burnt wood and ochre oxides to produce a range of colours.
Although the works are hard to date due to the materials used to create them, anthropological evidence points to the oldest specimens being in the region of forty thousand years old; in some cases possibly over one hundred thousand years old; with the most recent being between two and three thousand years old.
In all there are some twenty thousand works found in over five hundred caves comprising one of the world’s largest and most concentrated collections and is outstanding in both quality and range of subject. Works depict hunting scenes, with both human and animal depictions, and social scenes which give us a valuable insight in to the life of the people, showing their love of storytelling, dance and music.
The Royal Natal National Park Gate is located extremely close to the Mont Aux Sources Hotel and the park offers hikes and guided tours to see the Bushman paintings, guides are locals who have been raised in the area and trained from the local communities.
